Finest Television Picks: Seven Must-Watch Motion Pictures This Week

Highlighted Choice

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's unflinching commentary tackles the tyranny of feminine aesthetics and the feared consequences of ageing. The veteran actress delivers a brilliant acting turn playing Elisabeth, an aging celebrity demoted to hosting a fitness program on the small screen. Pushed out due to her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes an enigmatic and gruesome procedure known as the Substance. This generates a youthful duplicate called Sue, culminating in a steadily more vampiric relationship between the two. October 17th, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque thriller features the talented actress playing Laura, a skilled journalist who decides to take some time off from reporting on international wars to board an opulent ship with a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her partner, plus additional filthy rich individuals. But after a mysterious woman disappears from the ship during the evening and all passengers claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Available now, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills with this clever ghostly tale shot entirely from the viewpoint of the phantom. When a household including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the camera – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems aware of the poltergeist, and it seems guarding her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image in this self-referential adventure. He acts as a narcissistic celebrity named Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to appear at a festive event in Mallorca for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by the intelligence agency to spy on the suspected cartel boss, the actor's unique performing skills comes in handy. October 11th, evening, Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective without requiring a sequel. Located in 1978 Denver, multiple kidnappings has left the children on edge. Once Finney gets captured by the villain and imprisoned in a dungeon, he dreads a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line mounted nearby continues to ring, with eerie communicators offering help, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who proclaims early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about monetising the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of bad interior design, bad makeup and insincerity, though Jessica Chastain succeeds to depict the character in a likable light. October 14th, late night, the Film4 channel

This Espionage Thriller

This week's additional entry from the filmmaker is a spy mystery as tight as the polo necks used by Michael Fassbender's British agent.
